Many therapists approach treatment from a deficit-oriented perspective, which stems from a foundational belief that you are somehow broken and in need of fixing. As strength-based therapists, we believe that all of our clients are brimming with resiliency, skills, and strengths. Our job is to provide tools and support to help you build on your strengths to overcome the challenges and problems you face.
People often think that therapists give advice, but we very rarely tell our clients what to do. We believe changes are more likely to last if you decide to make them for yourself. In the first few sessions, you will work collaboratively with your therapist to develop goals to work on throughout therapy. As you meet for weekly sessions with your therapist, they may make observations about things that don’t seem to be working well, or suggest things that might help you meet your goals. However, your therapist will rarely give direct advice, and will never tell you whether you should leave a relationship or a job. While your therapist can help you to gain insight about your feelings and understand the pros and cons of a situation, only you can make those kinds of decisions.
With new clients, we always schedule weekly sessions. Any less frequently, and it’s difficulty to maintain momentum while you and your therapist are in the process of getting to know each other. In rare circumstances, you and your therapist may decide after a few months that it would be better for you to come to therapy every other week.
Appointments must be cancelled or rescheduled 24 hours prior to the client's scheduled appointment in order to avoid the $25.00 fee for a missed therapy session.
